The School Sport New Zealand calendar is jammed packed with numerous opportunities for rangatahi to represent their school. The All-Stars Zonal Secondary School Open Water Swimming Championships in Wellington, the NZSS Kathmandu Coast to Coast, and the NZSS Beach Volleyball Championships at Mount Maunganui successfully kicked off the term with what will be a busy year of school sport.
The SISS Triathlon and Duathlon will be hosted in picturesque town of Ōamaru on 5th March and provides an ideal build up for the NZSS Triathlon to be staged on the beautiful shores of lake Wānaka on 30th and 31st March. Both events have opportunities for both individual and teams racing.
The rowing season is in full swing with the North Island and South Island Rowing regattas being held at Lakes Karāpiro and Ruataniwha respectively on 11th – 12th March. These lead into rowing’s pinnacle event, Maadi Cup which will be hosted at Lake Karāpiro during Summer Tournament Week (27 March – 1 April).
Tennis New Zealand are excited to be hosting the NZSS Championship in Christchurch for the first time in many years and the Cup will be delivered in Hamilton during Summer Tournament Week.
Mark Atkins, Tennis New Zealand’s Tournament and Events Manager said “It’s great to see many schools back competing in the secondary school space after a few on and off years with the global pandemic. The decision to separate the championship and cup events has been well received, with an increase of school entries into the cup”. He went on to say, “I am looking forward to getting both of these events underway and providing a positive tennis experience for players, coaches, schools, and spectators.”

Futsal has had huge growth over the years. Football New Zealand competitions manager, Georgina Gatenby has been working to develop an alternative futsal opportunity for schools. The introduction of these were disrupted by Covid so 2023 will be the inaugural year of the new Regional Cups.
“In 2023 NZF is pleased to introduce the addition of two new Regional Cup competitions to further expand Futsal opportunities for Secondary School aged Participants. These competitions will increase localised opportunities and develop a playing pathway to the Championship. These competitions are open to all schools in New Zealand and have all grades (Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Senior Boys & Senior Girls playing over the same 3-day period. The Regional Cups are perfect for schools new to futsal that want to stay local while still developing their Futsal programme”
